Get The Puppy!

We put off getting a puppy for the longest time. We loved the idea of long walks in the park and snuggles on the couch. But the practicality of taking care of another living creature, with the clean up and responsibility seemed too much, especially with a newborn on the way. Puppies aren’t exactly known to be low-maintenance.

So we waited. We rationalised. We watched cute puppy videos online while reassuring ourselves, “One day, but not now.”

That is until 6 months ago we finally did take the plunge, one random Sunday after visiting a local breeder. Suddenly, with those round, sparkling boba eyes and floppy ears looking back at us, the cuteness suddenly outweighed the hesitation, and we took her home.

Our miniature dachshund Mila, speckled black, brown and white like a micro cow was the size of our palm. I was and remain smitten.

Having a puppy is a lot of work, but the love they give is a powerful antidote to stress and gives the entire family a huge dopamine hit. Their enthusiasm for the simplest things—like a treat or a belly rub—reminds me to find joy in the little moments. They don’t care about our daily mundane stresses. They just want to be with you, and that kind of unconditional love is pure magic.

Would I Recommend It? Absolutely.

Yes, owning a puppy is demanding. Yes, you’ll question your sanity during the early days (especially if you are 30 weeks pregnant and about to add a newborn to the mix). But I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. Because the happiness they bring—the tail wags, the playful energy, the sheer joy of having a furry companion—is priceless.

If you’re on the fence about getting a puppy, here’s my advice: Take the leap. Life’s too short to keep delaying the things that bring you joy.
